The Solano Playlot made it to the final round with more than 600 parks nationally competing, thanks to months of organizing by neighbors to share stories and photos and earn points for the park. Even more amazing, Solano Playlot is one of the only parks in the finals not affiliated with a school, library or other entity that has an organized parent base. In this final round, 3 of the 10 parks who get the most votes will win new cutting edge play equipment, which was recently featured in an opinion piece in the New York Times, so please cast your vote now.
The Solano Playlot is in a diverse neighborhood in Richmond, California with more than 800 children, and is one of the only unpaved play spaces for kids. The nearest elementary school’s grounds are completely paved, making this the play destination for hundreds of neighborhood children. Sadly, the play equipment in the Solano Playlot is more than 50 years old, dangerous and in disrepair, as the photos on our website show. In April, concerned neighbors created an organization, Solano PLAY, and officially adopted the playlot. We were awarded a grant for $10,000 to begin improvements. We are working to revitalize the park and make it a center of community activity and play for people of all ages and abilities.
The many kids who use this park need your help.
